□ Search Operation Procedure
1. Specify a search target.
2. Enter/Select the search values (information on the book to be searched for) for the search items.
3. Perform the search.
Local search: Click the [Search] button.
NII search: Click the [Search NII] button.
4. To clear the search values, click the [Clear search conditions] button.
□ Narrowing Down the Search Target
Checking the checkboxes of the following search items displayed on the bibliography search screen enables narrowing down the search target..

□ Search Method
■ Characters that can be used
Characters that can be used on a Japanese page include Kanji, Hiragana, Katakana, and alphanumeric characters.
Both upper case and lower-case alphabetic characters can be entered. Also, both em-size and en-size characters can be entered.
■ Primary and secondary search items
The following search items are primary search items that can be used alone as a search value.
・ Keyword
・ Title
・ Authors name
・ Publisher name
・ Subject
・ Classification
・ ISBN/ISSN
・ Bibliography ID
・ Registration number
・ Material ID
・ Request symbol
The following search items are secondary search items and must be combined with at least one primary search item to perform a search.
* is placed prior to the item name on the search screen.
・ Material designation
・ Holdings area
・ Year of publication
・ Country code
・ Language code
・ Section
・ Holdings place
・ Material format
■ Logical operation of the search values
If multiple search values are entered for one search item, one of the following three types of search is executed based on the entry method:
・ Logical product (AND) search: A search of material simultaneously satisfying two or more search values is performed.
Entry method: Join each search value by " " (blank).
Example) Search for material containing both "Japan" and "USA" in the title
Title: Japan USA
・ Logical sum (OR) search: A search of material satisfying at least of one of two or more search values is performed.
Entry method: Join each search value by "+" (plus sign).
Example) Search for material containing either "Japan" or "USA" in the title
Title: Japan+USA
・ Logical difference (NOT) search: A search of material, which satisfies some condition, but does not satisfy other conditions is performed.
Entry method: Join each search value by "^" (hat symbol).
Example) Search for material containing "Japan" and not containing "USA" in the title
Title: Japan^USA
*) To perform a NOT search, there must be at least one search value without "^".
If search values are entered for multiple search items, either of the following two types of search is done based on the entry method:
・ Logical product (AND) search: A search of material satisfying simultaneously two or more items is performed.
Entry method: Simply enter search values in multiple items.
Example) Search for material containing "Japan" in the title and "Fujitsu" in the author's name.
Title: Japan
Authors name: Fujitsu
・ Logical difference (NOT) search: A search of material, which satisfies some item, but does not satisfy other items is performed.
Entry method: Enter a search value to be excluded prefixed with "^".
Example) Search for material containing "Japan" in the title and not containing "Fujitsu" in the author's name.
Title: Japan
Authors name: ^Fujitsu
■ Keyword and literal searches
Two types of search methods, the keyword search and literal search, can be used.
In the keyword search, a search of material containing the entered search values as words (= keywords) is performed.
In the literal search, a search of material containing the entered search values simply as characters (= literals) is performed.
In the literal search, the following search methods can be specified:

* △ in the entry examples indicates one or more blank characters.
* [Local] indicates a search item that is valid only for local searches. Any item with [Local] is ignored during NII search even if any value is entered.

□ Search Options
■ Sorting of a list of bibliographies (sort key/sorting order)
Specifying the sort key and sorting order during a bibliography search displays a sorted list of bibliographies.
However, when a search is performed using only primary search items of holdings such as the registration number, material ID, and request symbol, the sort key and sorting order are not enabled.
The sort key is enabled only for local searches and is not valid for NII searches.
The following items can be specified as the first sort key:
・ Title
・ Authors name
・ Year of publication
The following two sorting orders can be specified:
(The sorting order of the second sort key conforms to that of the first sort key.)
・ ASC (ascending)
・ DESC (descending)
■ Number of items displayed in the list
Select the number of items to be displayed in one page of the bibliography list from the pull-down menu.
□ Bookmark Reference
Any searched bibliography can be saved so that it can be referenced later.
Bibliography information is saved in the bookmark and the bookmark can be "referenced" on the bibliography search screen.
[Bookmark] button: Displays a list of bibliographies stored in the bookmark. If only one bibliography is stored, its bibliography details are displayed.
□ Search History Reference
Clicking the [Search history] button enables you to reference the search history.
□ How to Use
Clicking the [How to use] button activates the "online manual" for the currently displayed screen.
□ Navigation Function
Clicking the
button causes a
jump to the beginning of a set of available function buttons.
